Cost-effective prevention of HIV-related Opportunistic Infections |

Cotrimoxazole prophylaxis, which prevents deaths and hospital admissions across all ages of individuals with HIV infection in resource-limited countries, is cheap. Economic research in adults in Uganda, and more recently in children in Zambia, has shown that Cotrimoxazole is highly costeffective. Specific research in Zambia has even found that it could be cost saving: if all HIV-infected children in Zambia received Cotrimoxazole prophylaxis, the net effect could be savings to the health system in the range of US$2.9 - 9.6 million per year. |

Funding has been agreed for a research programme investigating referral and uptake of HIV care and treatment services among HIV-positive women identified through prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV programme in Mwanza, Tanzania. This project is being carried out by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the National Institute for Medical Research, Mwanza, Tanzania. |

Research project on Integration of TB and HIV Services in India Approved |

A new project investigating the current challenges and opportunities for the integration of TB and HIV services for co-infected patients in Pune, India, has been approved by the Evidence for Action Programme Management Committee. The work will be a collaboration between London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Maharashtra Association of Anthropological Sciences, and National AIDS Research Institute, India. |

Achieving Universal Access - New UK HIV Strategy |

The UK Government launched its new strategy for halting and reversing the spread of HIV in the developing world on 2nd June 2008. DFID also announced £6 billion of funding over 7 years for strengthening health systems and services. This funding will go towards helping developing countries strengthen human resources; improve sexual and reproductive health services; and Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission. |
