Achieving Universal Access - New UK HIV Strategy PDF Print E-mail

The UK Government launched its new strategy for halting and reversing the spread of HIV in the developing world on 2nd June 2008. DFID also announced £6 billion of funding over 7 years for strengthening health systems and services. This funding will go towards helping developing countries strengthen human resources; improve sexual and reproductive health services; and Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission.

UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board issue recommendations on linking TB and HIV PDF Print E-mail

The UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board,
 
  • Recognises the commitment to the goal of scale-up to Universal Access at the 2006 High Level Meeting on AIDS as a determination to address the urgent threat that TB, particularly drug-resistant TB, poses to people living with HIV;
  • Calls upon member states to mobilize community involvement, including faith based organizations and affected communities, in addressing the prevention and treatment of TB in people living with HIV, including issues of stigma, human rights, migrants and other marginalized populations and, adherence support;

Two new open access journals PDF Print E-mail

Both journals aim to provide the most complete and reliable source of information on current developments in the field. The emphasis will be on publishing quality articles rapidly and making them freely available to researchers worldwide. All articles are deposited immediately upon publication in at least one widely and internationally recognized open access repository, such as Medline, PubMed Central. Moreover, all articles are indexed by PubMed, Google and Google Scholar, therefore providing the maximum exposure to the articles.

DFID launched their new Research Strategy for 2008-2013. This strategy outlines their priorities for research in the next five years.DFID have committed to spending £1bn on research over the next five years. Health remains one of the priority areas for research. Within the area of health, DFID will concentrate on:
  • Operational research to make health programmes more effective
  • Research on health systems
  • Developing drugs and vaccines for HIV and AIDS, TB and malaria and other diseases that most affect poor people
