MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS, based in Entebbe, Uganda develops and evaluates interventions for the care of HIV-infected patients and interventions for the prevention of HIV infection, and investigates determinants of HIV transmission and morbidity. The Unit has 350 staff members, all but 7 of whom are Ugandan, and plays a major role in strengthening the capacity of HIV researchers in Africa. The Unit has expertise in clinical medicine, social science, epidemiology, statistics, health economics, virology, and immunology. It works closely with Ugandan and international institutions with expertise in health systems research, health care providers in the government and NGO sector, and community-based organisations such as TASO. The extensive portfolio of research on HIV treatment and care makes the unit one of the most active in this field in any developing country. Institutional Consortium Leader: Dr. Benson Droti
