| Achieving Universal Access - New UK HIV Strategy |

The UK Government launched its new strategy for halting and reversing the spread of HIV in the developing world on 2nd June 2008. DFID also announced £6 billion of funding over 7 years for strengthening health systems and services. This funding will go towards helping developing countries strengthen human resources; improve sexual and reproductive health services; and Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission.
Evidence for Action contributed to the consultation process for this strategy, which prioritises many of the issues the consortium is working on. The strategy refers to the results of the CHAP trial in Zambia, which Evidence for Action partner MRC CTU were involved in, which showed the effectiveness of cotrimoxazole prophylaxis for preventing opportunistic infections in people with HIV. It also raises the limited uptake of this evidence, which is an area that Evidence for Action are currently investigating through a small initiative grant looking at cotrimoxazole policy and practice in Zambia, Malawi and Uganda.
